Trip Report for White River (West Fork)
Sunday, August 20, 2000

On Sunday we did a day trip down White River from 116th Street to Broad Ripple Park in Indy. The water was up enough that no pulling was necessary, and very little scraping of boats occurred. It was around 2.9 ft at Broad Ripple, and 3.9 ft (or 230 cfs) at Noblesville.

We paddled our canoe this trip and let our friends use our kayaks. That made Max, our dog, a little confused, though. He was used to riding on front of his kayak (not in our canoe), but he wasn't so sure about the new driver.

We were a little worried about the quality of the water, though we did still see and hear lots of wildlife. We saw turtles, great blue herons, kingfishers, ducks and geese galore. We heard woodpeckers and owls. We also came across several fishermen who said they had been catching lots of fish all day long.

We found a pretty rest spot for lunch on an island. The other side of the riverbank was lined with houses, but our spot seemed secluded enough.

The weather predictions were wrong, and Sunday was a glorious day. It started off cool in the morning, but the sun came out strong and warmed things right up. There was hardly a cloud in the sky, the temperature around 80° made it a great day for paddling.

We took our time paddling and finished the trip in about five and a half hours. Just in time to shuttle the cars, pack up and still enjoy pizza on the porch at Bazbeaux's in Broad Ripple.
