Mounds State Park, located
off I-69 east of Anderson, features 10 distinct "earthworks"
built by a group of prehistoric Indians known as the Adena-Hopewell
people. The largest earthwork, the "Great Mound", is believed
to have been constructed around 160 B.C. Archaeological surveys
seem to indicate it was used as a gathering place for religious
ceremonies.
The Bronnenberg House
is considered to be one of the oldest buildings constructed as a
dwelling in Madison County. The Nature Center and Park Office are
now together in a new building by the main parking lot.
